Decision log
Every mapping decision that changes a published number is recorded here with its evidence, who decided it, and what would change it. Entries are never edited; a reversal is a new entry. Evidence tiers T1, T1b, T2, T3, T4 follow the placement-authority rules recorded in that log; EXT is an external published source that supports but never by itself creates a mapping.
D-2026-09-03-01: 41-9031 Sales Engineers
Primary home Information Systems (0.55) over Sales (0.45). accepted, review status pending_confirmation, tier T1b. Decided by Mark Keith on 2026-09-03; recorded by Claude Code.
Effect: soc2018_chapter_relevance.csv: IS primary 0.55, SALES contributing 0.45, authority byu_msb. Partition crosswalk primary SALES -> IS, has_multi_chapter yes.
| Tier | Source | Finding | Direction |
|---|
| T1b | Mark Keith, IS faculty attestation, 2026-09-03 | Technical pre-sales requires systems knowledge; sales and solutions engineers are an IS destination. | IS |
| EXT | O*NET 30.3, 41-9031.00 Knowledge importance | Customer and Personal Service 89, Sales and Marketing 84, Engineering and Technology 83, Mathematics 70, Administration and Management 67. | split |
| EXT | O*NET 30.3, 41-9031.00 Work Activities importance | Working with Computers 80; Selling or Influencing Others 83. | split |
| EXT | O*NET 30.3, 41-9031.00 Technology Skills | Salesforce, AWS, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, AutoCAD, SolidWorks. The occupation spans industrial sales engineers, not only software. | technical |
| EXT | O*NET 30.3, 41-9031.00 Related Occupations | Includes 15-1211 Computer Systems Analysts (mapped IS 0.85 in this project). | IS |
| EXT | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Sales Engineers | Bachelor's in engineering or related fields like business; requires a combination of technical knowledge of the products and strong interpersonal skills. | split |
| EXT | This corpus, live ATS panel, lmi.postings_deduped, 2026-09-03, n = 682 sales/solutions engineer titles | 94.1% mention systems terms (APIs, integration, architecture, SQL, cloud); 26.2% mention quota or commission; 17.3% ask for a technical degree, 0.6% for a business degree; 86.5% AI-related. | IS |
| EXT | This corpus, term-profile comparison, lmi.postings_deduped with LinkedIn excluded, 2026-09-03: 24 skill and competency terms, sales-engineer titles (n = 364) against IS titles (n = 3,020) and Sales titles (n = 2,016) | Correlation with the IS profile 0.857, with the Sales profile 0.579. Mean absolute gap 10.8 points to IS, 17.6 to Sales. 17 of 24 terms closer to IS; the 7 closer to Sales are customer-facing delivery terms (demo, presentation, requirements, account management), not quota terms. Full table in the decision file. | IS |
| T1 | discoveris.byu.edu/careers | The BYU IS published role list does not name sales engineer or solutions engineer. | neutral |
Reading: External taxonomies call it a tie (O*NET within one point; BLS names both degrees). The corpus breaks the tie: the skill-and-competency profile of sales-engineer postings is the IS profile (r = 0.86) rather than the Sales profile (r = 0.58), the job as written is a systems job, and O*NET's related occupations point at Computer Systems Analysts. IS primary, Sales contributing, 0.55/0.45.
Limits: O*NET's 41-9031 is broader than this corpus's solutions engineers. The BYU IS role list is silent, so this is T1b, not T1; it becomes active only on T2 placement evidence meeting the volume, persistence, and base thresholds.
What would change it: T2 placement records showing IS below threshold for two cycles, or Marketing/Sales program records showing the reverse. Produces a new entry and a crosswalk_version bump; this entry is never edited.
D-2026-09-28-01: 11-1021; 13-1111; 13-1161; 13-1199 (11-1011 unchanged) General and Operations Managers; Management Analysts; Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists; Business Operations Specialists, All Other
Entrepreneurial Management gains four contributing occupation links, and the occupations figure falls back to contributing links for a program with no primary. accepted, review status active, tier EXT. Decided by Mark Keith on 2026-09-28; recorded by Claude Code.
Effect: crosswalk_version v1 to v2 (core.soc_crosswalk and core.soc_chapter_relevance v2; core.category_crosswalk updated to match). soc2018_chapter_relevance.csv: ENTR contributing 11-1021 0.10 (BIZMGT 1.00 to 0.90), 13-1161 0.15 (MKTG 1.00 to 0.85), 13-1199 0.10 (BIZMGT 0.45 to 0.35), 13-1111 0.10 (STRAT 0.30 to 0.25, IS 0.25 to 0.20); 11-1011 ENTR 0.40 unchanged. Every code keeps its primary. soc2018_to_book3_crosswalk.csv: has_multi_chapter yes for 11-1021 and 13-1161. Book 3 standard, component 4: a program with no primary occupation lists its top five contributing occupations, labelled as shared.
| Tier | Source | Finding | Direction |
|---|
| EXT | This corpus, Entrepreneurial Management postings, current classifier run, last 90 days, all geographies, n = 344, 2026-09-28 | 213 founder's office or founder's associate generalists; 26 founder's office product/tech; 23 entrepreneur-in-residence; 16 incubator or accelerator; 15 founder's office growth/marketing; 11 founder's office operations/strategy; 28 other venture or startup titles. | ENTR |
| EXT | This corpus, pub.program_facet_totals, Book 3 profile (cautious gap), all geographies, 2026-09-26 | ENTR leads the other programs on entrepreneurship (33.7%, +27.1 points), business development (19.1%, +12.8), partnerships (22.7%, +12.6), market research (13.4%, +10.9), go-to-market (14.9%, +8.4) and stakeholder management (11.9%, +4.8). | ENTR |
| EXT | O*NET 11-1011.00 Chief Executives | Determine and formulate policies and provide overall direction of companies; founders are not mentioned, but this project's crosswalk records that founders code here. | split |
| EXT | O*NET 11-1021.00 General and Operations Managers | Plan, direct, or coordinate operations overseeing multiple departments; duties too varied for a single management specialty. Matches the founder's-office generalist. | ENTR contributing |
| EXT | O*NET 13-1161.00 Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists | Sample titles include Business Development Specialist; tasks include researching markets and competitors to identify potential markets. | ENTR contributing |
| EXT | O*NET 13-1199.00 Business Operations Specialists, All Other | Residual code; detailed occupations include Online Merchants (13-1199.06). | ENTR contributing |
| EXT | O*NET 13-1111.00 Management Analysts | Study problems, analyze data, recommend new procedures; includes management consultants. Matches founder's-associate strategy projects. | ENTR contributing |
| EXT | This corpus, core.classification_final, 2026-09-28 | No Entrepreneurial Management posting carries a SOC code, so every proposed link is declared, not empirical. | neutral |
Reading: SOC has no founder occupation and the partition allows one primary program per code, so an ENTR primary link would have to take another chapter's primary; the only arguable case, Chief Executives, would leave Strategic Management with one primary occupation. Contributing links place Entrepreneurial Management where its postings' work sits (operations generalists, market and business development, strategy projects, the founder role) without misstating other chapters, and a one-line rule change lets the figure list them.
Limits: Declared weights, not measurements. Weight x employment favors very large occupations, so General and Operations Managers leads and Chief Executives comes last.
What would change it: SOC-coded ENTR postings, T2 placement records from the Entrepreneurial Management program, or a SOC revision adding an entrepreneur occupation. Produces a new entry and a crosswalk_version bump; this entry is never edited.
